Peregrinos
Berkeley Symphony Orchestra and Latino Youth Collective from Indianapolis
Tuesday October 13, 2009
FREE! - 8pm
In conjunction with the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, La Peña is pleased to host a free screening of “Peregrinos: Pilgrims, A Musical Journey”, a PBS documentary regarding Peruvian-American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s two-year residency (2007-2009) with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. During this time, Gabriela gathered stories from the Latino community to compose a multi-movement symphonic work which reflected their experiences as immigrants in the United States. This work, “Peregrinos,” was premiered in February 2009 in Indianapolis, and receives its west coast premiere by the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, October 15th, 7PM at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall.
Special guests include the La Peña Community Chorus, young Ecuadoran violinist Angie Logroño Godoy who will provide live music; members of the Indianapolis-based Latino Youth Collective who inspired Gabriela’s composition and who will also show some of their own documentary work; and Berkeley Symphony’s new conductor, Joana Carneiro. Gabriela, who serves as Creative Advisor with Berkeley Symphony, will emcee the evening including a Q&A session with the audience.
This special event is being held in advance of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra’s west coast premiere of “Peregrinos” on Thursday, October 15th, 7PM, in Zellerbach Hall.
