La Peña kicks off its 35th Anniversary celebration series
with a mural commissioned by the Trust Your Struggle Crew.
The Trust Your Struggle artists collective are painting a new mural inside the café lobby of La Peña Cultural Center representing the history and continued legacy of the center. The new mural, scheduled to be completed by the first week of February 2010, celebrates La Peña's 35th Year and its public unveiling (Sunday, February 7, 2010) launches the series of events planned to celebrate the anniversary, including an all-day street festival on Saturday, June 5, 2010.
Located in the lobby area between the theater and the restaurant Café Valparaiso, the mural depicts the colors and images of the prolific history and cultural work of La Peña for the past 35 years, and the promising future of the new generations of artists in the center.
"We selected the Trust your Struggle collective because they are young artists, modern storytellers with talent, sensitivity and a poignant mission, very similar to the one that La Peña created 35 years ago," said Sarah Guerra, La Peña's staff member.
Trust Your Struggle produces work with the theme of immigration, self-determination, freedom, and community empowerment. "It is an honor to be working with La Peña, and its unbelievable that we are able to be part of its history," said TYS collective member Robert Trujillo.
"To create a brand new mural at La Peña is special because it involves a cultural landmark that we have all danced, organized, and participated in various capacities. We want to create something beautiful and powerful. We thank La Peña for placing their trust in us for such a great task," emphasized Trujillo.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City, Trust Your Struggle is a collective of visual artists, educators, and cultural workers dedicated to social justice and community activism through the medium of art. Their work around the country and internationally, includes graphic design, printmaking, silk screening, photography, illustration, graffiti writing, and mural painting.
Since 2003, the collective has produced gallery installations, live paintings, murals and arts education workshops with youth and community organizations. As contemporary storytellers, the art of Trust Your Struggle continues the legacy of visual language influenced by graffiti art, comic books, political posters, religious spiritual icons, and their own indigenous traditions. ###
