Known as an aphrodisiac, a soother, a love maker, Miel (honey) is also a cabaret of artists & musicians able to cleanse your spirit and inspire your heart. An eclectic night of Afro-Cuban dance, blues, folk, hip hop and soul with Cynthia Renta, Kali Boyce as TuffNStuff, Skim (from LA) and Maritri (from NYC). This event is hosted by Maceo Cabrera Estévez.
Cynthia Renta, a cultural worker, dancer and producer from Oakland will spread love throughout the night with dances inspired by Oshún.
She is the founding director of Project Cimarrona and has also performed with the Bomberos de Brooklyn, the Susana Arenas Afro-Cuban Dance Co, Grupo Cacique y Kongo, Las Bomberas de La Bahía and Grupo Guaribo Bomba Dance. Tuff N Stuff, the love child of Eartha Kitt and Holwlin' Wolf, is a soul-singing-guitar-slingin'-honest-to-godness Blues Man and the alter ego of the singer songwriter Kali B. Tuff N Stuff will melt your hearts with some blues at Miel. Skim draws from each of her experiences and environments, she articulates herself through the music she creates, and captivates her audiences with raw honesty and humor. Skim mixes revolutionary visions and fiery rap lyrics with her sultry singing, while strumming a guitar. Her rhythm and percussion flows with the passion of her Corean ancestry. Raised in NYC and presented in Los Angeles, she fuses the consciousness of third world peoples with the urban streets of U.S. cities. You may remember Skim from HBO's Def Poetry Jam and she was recently on tour with Mangos with Chilil Lastly is Maritri, one of the founders of the SoulFolk Experience of NYC. Few singers talk about stories of love, life, and loss the way Maritri can. Her poignant, bittersweet lyrics, tells “grown folks stories” in a way that will break you down to the core. Her recent performances include appearances at Def Poetry Plugged In at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; the Apollo Theater with Sekou Sundiata and Ani Di Franco.
