La Vida Vence a la Muerte

March 19, 2016 @ 7:00 pm

La Vida Vence La Muerte March 19ENCORE PERFORMANCE! The Chorus is proud to again be presenting this beautiful cantata commemorating the triumph of life over death in this moving tribute to two young people — Rodrigo Rojas de Negri and Carmen Gloria Quintana — who were doused with gasoline and set on fire in Santiago, Chile, in 1986 by an army patrol. Rodrigo died four days later from his injuries, but Carmen survived—severely disfigured by the burns, later submitting herself to dozens of surgical procedures to mitigate her injuries. She went on to work tirelessly for justice and human rights.

After nearly 30 years, the perpetrators were finally arrested and charged in Chile with these heinous crimes this July 21st.Celebrate with us the victory of Life Over Death — La Vida Vence a La Muerte. The cantata is a testament to the ability of the human spirit to overcome terrible treachery, told through poetry and song. Other songs by Chilean composers from the times both before and after the September 11th, 1973 coup will complete this evening of tribute. Songs by Violeta Parra, Victor Jara, Patricio Manns, Quilapayún, and a poem by Pablo Neruda set to music by Berkeley’s own Chilean master, Rafael Manriquez. La Peña would like to give special recognition to the author, poet and songwriter of this cantata, Fernando Andrés Torres. We look forward to seeing you at this special event!
