Namorados Da Lua (Brazilian Funk) w/ Special Guests!

On Friday, March 11, Namorados da Lua (NDL) band, ManoMasa band and La Peña invite the community to honor the resistance and resilience of Indigenous and African communities from the Bay to Bahia.

Namorados Da Lua unites Brazilian and North American musicians with a common love of creating positive music with a message.  NDL showcases a beautiful blend of diverse styles, incorporation musical influences from reggae, jazz, pop, rock and funk as well as Brazilian samba, forró, and Axe carnival music.Their music brings unstoppable driving rhythms, fiery lyrical grooves, harmonious instrumentation and original funk that makes them irresistibly danceable for any audience.

8 pm – Ohlone leaders Wichacpiluta Candelaria and Anthony Sul will welcome us and open the evening with words, prayer and traditional songs.

8:15 pm – Ras K’DJ set

9 pm – ManoMasa band performs! From Rio, Bahia, Goiás, & California, this band of transfronteristas weaves together poetry & revolutionary, feminist & folkloric music from Las Américas.

10 pm – NDL (Namorados da Lua) performs. In addition to the Afro-Brazilian samba, reggae, samba-reggae, and funk music that NDL is known for, we are inviting a number of special guests to join us on stage and share their wisdom with us:

– Ras K’dee (K’DJ) from AudioPharmacy band and Seventh Native American Generation (SNAG) magazine will DJ and perform as a guest MC.

– Reverend Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou and Jay-Marie Hill from Rev. Sekou and the Holy Ghost will speak about the Black Lives Matter movement and share a song from their recently released album, “The Revolution Has Come”.

– Black and Indigenous leader Van Dell will speak about her experience and the vision of Qilombo Oakland / AfrikaTown Community Garden.

– Queer Latina / Chicana poet, capoeirista and artivista Kaira Portillo will share her poetry / spoken word.
