La Peña is a proud partner of the first ever Bay Area Mural Festival. The Bay Area Mural Festival(BAMFest 2016) brought together 25 master muralists and mural groups, and 20 at risk youth through a series of artist residencies and workshops culminating in the painting of 13 murals along the Berkeley- Oakland border from October 17 - October 21, 2016.

Arte Urgente - Oakland Unaccompanied Immigrant Minors
From February through April of 2016, with the support from the Doris Duke Charitable foundation, La Pena Cultural Center, Oakland Youth Alliance, and the Oakland School District, artist Caleb Duarte worked with forty undocumented minor youth currently placed in foster care in Oakland California while they wait for legal proceedings. Duarte has established an artist-working studio for undocumented minor youth that can potentially be deported in 2016. Over 400 unaccompanied minors are currently enrolled in the Oakland School district with very little legal, psychological, and/or cultural services and are most likely to be destined to an underground existence and or to be deported back to their original countries.
