Food First Monthly Meeting: Disasters, Agroecology, and Decolonial Reconstruction in Puerto Rico

October 18, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Everyone is welcome to attend Food First’s monthly community meeting the third Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm in La Peña’s lounge!

This month’s topic is on Puerto Rico.
Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, an island whose resiliency has been systematically undermined by centuries of colonization and exploitation. Can Puerto Rican social movements advance a people-centered reconstruction that is just, equitable and sustainable? Agroecologists and food sovereignty activists from SOCLA and Boricua will discuss the challenges and opportunities –starting with the island’s highly compromised food system.

SPEAKERS:

Georges Félix: Puerto Rican food sovereignty activist and agroecologist, SOCLA Puerto Rico.
Organización Boricuá de Agricultura Ecológica of Puerto Rico (the Puerto Rican Association for Ecological Agriculture, representative TBD)

Miguel Altieri Professor Emeritus of Agroecology, University of California Berkeley
Clara Nichols Professor of Agroecology, President of SOCLA
Moderator: Eric Holt-Giménez, PhD

Sponsored by the North American chapter of SOCLA (The Latin American Scientific Society of Agroecology)

ABOUT FOOD FIRST:

Food First envisions a world in which all people have access to healthy, ecologically produced, and culturally appropriate food. After 40 years of analysis of the global food system, we know that making this vision a reality involves more than technical solutions—it requires political transformation. That’s why Food First supports activists, social movements, alliances, and coalitions working for systemic change. Our work—including action-oriented research, publications, projects and Food Sovereignty Tours—gives you the tools to understand the global challenges, build your local movement, and engage with the global movement for food sovereignty.
