Son Jarocho Special Workshop

As part of the project Las Peteneras these last few classes of the spring session will be led by Patricio Hidalgo, Maria de la Rosa, and Yaratzé Hidalgo Sandoval. Join the trio on June 19 for some lesser known son jarochos that tell us herstories like the story of María Terelole! Please also plan to join us for the monthly fandango on June 21 and the last class of the season on June 26.

The tradition of son jarocho music originated in Veracruz, Mexico. Son jarocho is practiced in community and reflects the cycle of life. During the winter session, we’re focusing on sones that reminisce about love and celebrate the coming of Spring.  We’ll learn about Candelaria, Carnaval and los San Patricios and we’ll culminate with a celebration of the Spring Equinox. Hear how love in all its forms is expressed in the beautiful poetry of son jarocho and learn to compose your own versada for your loved ones! We hope to have at least one guest master artist in this session.

Class focuses on instruction in jarana jarocha, singing (including poetry), and percussion (including zapateado dance), although all son jarocho instruments are welcomed. Emphasis is placed on working in ensemble and understanding “how all the parts fit together”. No previous experience necessary. Please bring your own instruments, hard-soled shoes (for zapateado), skirt. The study of jarana and zapateado are mutually beneficial.  Many master teachers recommend that anyone studying son first learn the basics of the zapateado.  And those who feel drawn principally to dancing (zapateado) are advised that learning the basics of the jarana benefit a dancer’s learning process — it helps everyone understand how these two crucial elements fit together in this community music.  All levels are welcomed to participate, this is a group class and we do our best to find a middle ground where everyone can enjoy practicing what they are learning while they progress in their learning process.

The class is invited to participate in monthly Fandangos, which are community jams, held on the third Friday of each month.

Guest Master Artists
We have the great fortune of welcoming visiting master artists from Veracruz to guest teach our classes fairly often. During this session, through the generosity of La Peña Cultural Center, Brava Theater, DíaPaSon, the National Endowment for the Arts, Theatre Bay Area/Dancer’s Group CA$H grant, and Center for Cultural Innovation (Investing in Artists), National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC) Fund for the Arts, and as part of programming leading up to LAS PETENERAS in June, we are expecting several classes this session to be taught by master artists:
