Welcome to La Peña! Promoting social justice & intercultural understanding through the arts since 1975.
Come enjoy the rich culture, music and dance from the island-nation of Bali. Gamelan Sekar Jaya will showcase 3 of its ensembles. Tuned to a four-tone scale in slendro tuning, GSJ’s Gamelan Angklung ensemble presents a cheerful, open, and rhythmically intricate musical landscape, expressed in the fluid grace of its traditional repertoire. In GSJ’s Dance ensemble, details of music and dance are tightly coordinated, and an ideal of perfect unity is sought in every gesture, nuance, expression, phrase, and rhythmic change. GSJ’s Gamelan Gender ensemble is provided by four musicians playing ten-keyed paired gamelan instruments—one of Bali’s most technically challenging yet rewarding instruments. (www.gsj.org)
Purnamasari performs world music that is food for the soul, with a variety of styles. In this event, the band performs the song and dance pieces featuring traditional Gamelan music instruments and choreographed movements drawn from Balinese dance vocabulary. Purnamasari is a band with gamelan-infused and guitar-oriented songs, rooted in the Community Garden and Cross Cultural Music Projects, and is currently working on recording an album.
