Welcome to La Peña! Promoting social justice & intercultural understanding through the arts since 1975.
Doors open at 7:45pm / Film & Live Performance at 8pm
Join film director Eve A. Ma, for a special film screening of her recently completed award-winning documentary film Masters of Rhythm. Shot in Peru, the film focuses on Afro-Peruvian music, dance and culture and especially on the cajón, a percussion instrument developed by Afro-Peruvians in the late 18th century. Masters of Rhythm has screened in seven festivals in four countries and has won two awards.
The second part of the program features a live performance by Master Percussionist Peta Robles, whose uncle, Lalo Izquierdo, is featured in the film as a cajón and zapateo master. Accompanying her is Afro-Peruvian dance and music teacher Gabriela Shiroma and Rosita Los Santos on guitar.
After the film there will be a Q&A with the film’s director as well as the Afro-Peruvian artists.
Come support Afro-Peruvian culture at La Peña Saturday, July 22 at 8pm!
