A new temporary mural installation celebrating Chilean folklorist Violeta Parra’s 100 years of cultural legacy, was inaugurated Sunday, October 29th at La Peña: Homage to Violeta Parra by local mural group Los Pobres Artistas.
The mural was debuted at last Sunday’s tribute concert: Homage to Violeta Parra, featuring the La Peña Community Chorus, poetry, dance and folklore by local Chilean artists, and an altar installation by Ximena Sosa.
Los Pobres Artistas are a collective of mainly Chilean born artist, living currently in the Bay Area. This mural is dedicated to Violeta Parra in her 100 year birthday anniversary. In addition to being a musician, songwriter, researcher and activist, she was a visual artist. One of her most renowned medias was her work in “arpilleras”, brightly colored patchwork arts, which have been exhibited all over the world, including the Louvre Museum in Paris. As visual artists we connect with that part of her and have included some of her designs in this mural.
Come to an event or class in La Peña’s theater now through December 31, 2017 and check out this epic installation.
