La Mixta Criolla

Inspired in the rich and soulful music of Puerto Rico and the greater Caribbean, La Mixta Criolla’s sound is based on the mix of “cueros, cuerdas y voces” (skins, strings, and vocals). The group’s repertoire of originals and funky renditions of traditional tunes, features a variety of swinging Caribbean grooves, from plena, bomba, guaracha jíbara, seis and aguinaldo, to merengue, son, rumba, cumbia and salsa. Featuring Sandra García Rivera on vocals and güícharo; Román “Ito” Carrillo on bongó, panderos, barriles and vocals; Camilo Landao on cuatro guitar and vocals; Ayla Dávila on bass and vocals; Javier Navarrette on timbales, cajón and vocals; and Héctor Lugo on congas, panderos, barriles and vocals.

The Bay Area Bomba y Plena Youth & Adult Workshop Ensembles

Both the Youth and Adult ensembles study and perform traditional forms of Puerto Rican music and dance. Bringing together folks from diverse cultural backgrounds united by their common love and passion for Puerto Rican music, in particular the traditions of Plena and Bomba.

Under the direction of Shefali Shah and Héctor Lugo, with the generous support of el maestro Román “Ito” Carrillo as well as numerous masters and practitioners from the Island, The Workshop has been in existence for 17 years promoting the study and appreciation of traditional Puerto Rican music, its history and evolution, and its place in the broader Afro-Caribbean musical culture. The group performs Bombas, Plenas, as well as pieces from the Jíbaro music tradition using a variety of typical instruments such as the barriles, the cuás, panderos, güícharo, maracas, cuatro and guitar.
