Free Afro-Peruvian Cajón Workshop: Lecture and Demonstration

December 28, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free/Donations Encouraged!

The cajón is a box-shaped percussion instrument originally from Peru, played by slapping the front or rear faces (generally thin plywood) with the hands and fingers. Cajones are primarily played in Afro-Peruvian music, as well as contemporary styles of flamenco and jazz, among other genres. Gabriela Shiroma, director of De Rompe & Raja Cultural Association, will provide a lecture and demonstration of cajon history and Afro-Peruvian genres played in the Coastal Region of Peru. She is bringing with her some very special guests: Afro-Peruvian Master drummer & dancer Kata Robles Izquierdo directly from Peru,  as well as Master drummer in residence at La Peña Peta Robles Izquierdo.  Bring your cajón if you have one! Peruvian souvenirs and music will be for sale!

PLEASE NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP WILL BE PRIMARILY IN SPANISH WITH TRANSLATION TO ENGLISH.
