Entheogenic Research, Integration and Education(ERIE), a nonprofit that provides research, integration, and education services for individuals and communities interested in entheogens and psychedelics, presents a special dialogue between two powerhouses in the field! Both speakers recently published books on the topic of ayahuasca and healing, Joe Tafur (The Fellowship of the River) and Rachel Harris (Listening to Ayahuasca). What a way to start the new year!
Medical doctor, Joe Tafur, and psychologist, Rachel Harris, will discuss their books, interview each other, and share their stories. We’ll explore different models of how healing happens with ayahuasca biochemically, neurologically, psychologically, and spiritually (from a Western and indigenous perspective). We’ll consider the role of intention before the ceremony, navigation during the ceremony and discernment, and behavior change after the ceremony. We promise love, laughter, and time for questions.
Rachel Harris, PhD is the author of Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope for Depression, Addiction, PTSD, and Anxiety. She was in the 1968 Esalen Residential Program and had a private psychotherapy for thirty-five years. Rachel received a National Institutes of Health New Investigator’s Award and has published more than forty scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals.. She lives on an island off the coast of Maine and winters in the SF Bay area.
Joe Tafur, M.D., is a Colombian-American family physician originally from Phoenix, Arizona. After completing his family medicine training at UCLA, Dr. Tafur spent two years in academic research at the UCSD Department of Psychiatry in a lab focused on mind-body medicine. After his research fellowship, over a period of six years, he lived and worked in the Peruvian Amazon at the traditional healing center Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual. There he worked closely with master Shipibo shaman Ricardo Amaringo and trained in ayahuasca shamanism. In his new book “The Fellowship of the River: A Medical Doctor’s Exploration into Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine,” through a series of stories, Dr. Tafur shares his unique experience and integrative medical theories.
