Next week @ La Peña-Jeff Chang on Immigrant Rights

As part of the Immigrants Voices Festival, La Peña is proud to host Jeff Chang, an American journalist and music critic who has studied immigration in the United States extensively. Join us for a presentation on Immigrants in Hip Hop by Jeff Chang. The presentation will be followed by a panel on Immigrant Rights.

Reportero in the News

Here’s a captivating interview between Bernardo Ruiz, the director of Reportero, and  Sampsonia Way Magazine, an online magazine that celebrates literary free expression and supports persecuted writers worldwide. Ruiz speaks about freedom of the press and safety concerns for journalists in Mexico

Another article, written by Amnesty International, highlights the details of the murders of 6 journalists in Mexico in the last month.  This is a clear statement that Mexico’s freedom of expression is still clearly under attack.

Reportero documents the dangers of being an investigative journalist in Mexico, and also highlights the perseverance of those who continue to work in this dangerous field to make sure that the truth is published.

In Mexico, more than 40 journalists have been slain or have vanished since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderón came to power and launched a government offensive against the country’s powerful drug cartels and organized crime groups. As the drug war intensifies and the risks to journalists become greater, will the free press be silenced?

 Reportero (72 min.) follows a veteran reporter and his colleagues at Zeta, a Tijuana-based independent newsweekly, as they stubbornly ply their trade and challenge the drug cartels and corrupt local officials during a wave of unprecedented violence against journalists in Mexico, one of the deadliest places in the world for the media.

Winner of the Ambulante Documentary Festival 2012, Full Frame Documentary Festival 2012 & Human Rights Watch Film Festival 2012, Reportero is a co-production of Quiet Pictures, LLC and the Independent Television Service (ITVS) produced in association with Latino Public Broadcasting, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
