Baracutanga – on tour from New Mexico!

Yes, you can dance to Baracutanga’s music till you drop, but you can also settle back in your chair and appreciate the craftsmanship of the writing and arranging, the attention to detail, and the sonic textures of blended Latin American musical styles.

The seven-piece band – representing four different countries – prides itself on arranging traditional South American rhythms in interesting ways, such as huayño and cumbia with Middle-Eastern derbuka or the Afro-Cuban bata and Afro-Peruvian festejo blended with Andean zampoñas, among countless other rhythmic combinations. This kind of experimentation has resulted in an exciting and iconic flavor all its own that leaves dancing crowds wanting more.

Baracutanga’s live sound has been a staple in New Mexico’s music scene since its conception but has also ventured to the locals in Austin, Texas and North America’s quintessential music city, New Orleans, Louisiana. The band’s sound concept also gave them recognition and an honorable award-winning status; winning the New Mexico Music Awards’ Albuquerque Song Competition in 2014 for their original tune “Rumba de Burque” and the New Mexico Music Award’s “Best Original Arrangement” Award for “Deja de Matar”.

With their first full-length studio album set to release this year, Baracutanga is looking to spread this fresh take on the South American flavor to an international audience; to have fans experience this astounding blend of new sounds with the traditional musical elements of South America.  Recorded in four different studios in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Cadiz, Spain, the album features more than 50 instruments and 25 musical styles, and just about every one of those instruments and styles finds just the right place.
