Welcome to La Peña! Promoting social justice & intercultural understanding through the arts since 1975.
La Peña Cultural Center presents: The Bay Area Premiere of Dogs of Democracy – followed by a discussion with Director Mary Zournazi!
Dogs of Democracy is a documentary about the stray dogs of Athens and the people who take care of them. Filmmaker Mary Zournazi explores life on the streets through the eyes of the dogs and peoples’ experience. Shot on location in Athens, the birthplace of democracy, the documentary is about how Greece has become the ‘stray dogs of Europe’, and how the dogs have become a symbol of hope for the people and for the anti-austerity movement. A universal story about love and loyalty and what we might learn from animals.
Representatives from Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) will be joining the film’s director in a post-film discussion! ARF is an award-winning, nationally recognized leader for its unique mission of “People Rescuing Animals…Animals Rescuing People.®” Founded in 1991, ARF rescued more than 38,000 cats and dogs and has expanded its national outreach and education programs. ARF elevates pets in our society, enhances connections, and transforms the bond between people and animals.
We look forward to seeing you at La Peña for the Bay Area Premiere: Dogs of Democracy, with Q&A with Director Mary Zournazi!
