La Peña presents: Big Band Jazz Night! The Morchestra Jazz Ensemble, with special guest, Nicolas Bearde
The Morchestra is a Berkeley-based jazz orchestra that plays big band jazz filtered through the mind of arranger and composer Tony Corman, a mid-century East Coaster long resident in the Bay Area. The players in the band are Bay Area stalwarts, fine professionals all, and the material is a rich mix of standards. The spirit is one of sophisticated fun, enjoyable for both the deeply initiated jazz listener and civilians who simply love music in all its positive manifestations.
Our special guest, the amazing vocalist Nicolas Bearde, is a Bay Area treasure who has performed all over the world with an amazing cast of other jazz greats. All About Jazz magazine says: “Bearde’s soulful and affecting baritone sits atop these impeccably tailored arrangements of sterling standards, the results are absolutely stunning.”
We are honored and delighted to be able to present him in a big band setting, with selections drawn from Mr. Bearde’s vast songbook, including covers of the late Billy Eckstein, which requires pipes, as we say! Nicolas Bearde has pipes – a wonderful natural resonance in his voice that is very compelling.
We’ll also be featuring the band, in ensemble and as soloists that will delight you.
Morchestra’s Director, Composer and Arranger is Tony Corman.
*La Peña Cultural Center is wheelchair accesible.
