Welcome to La Peña! Promoting social justice & intercultural understanding through the arts since 1975.
Celebrate Women’s History Month at our Empowering Women of Color Open Mic!! This Open Mic event provides a space to celebrate the voices of women of color that enact and highlight the beauty of our cultural diversity. We welcome ALL who experience life through the lens of women in body, spirit, identity – past, present, future, and fluid. Come support local Bay Area talent or get ready to perform yourself!
In collaboration with the UC Berkeley Women of Color Initiative.
Curandera Frida is a healer. She and her flute make audible the music that is always around us. Frida performed at our last Open Mic in February and offered us a moment that felt truly magical and transcendent. We know we needed more than 5 minutes with her on stage! We’re so happy to have her opening the night.
Nida Liftawiya is a Palestinian refugee, the daughter of one of the last generations of free born Palestinians. In 2018, the City of Oakland awarded her with “Local Oakland Hero” for the work she has done in our communities. She is a constant inspiration and it’s an honor to have her closing the night at our Open Mic!
