Welcome to La Peña! Promoting social justice & intercultural understanding through the arts since 1975.
Join us in celebrating 49 years since La Peña opened its doors! Featuring Orquesta La Moderna Tradición, this anniversary concert will not only honor the long history of La Peña’s mission serving BIPOC and immigrant/refugee communities, but will also celebrate its commitment to preserve and promote the roots art traditions from these communities’ home lands.
Orquesta La Moderna Tradición, in this sense, is the perfect band to lead the celebration, as they have been one of the most faithful and authentic culture bearers of Traditional and Popular Cuban Music from the 1940’s-1960’s —and they had their very first gig at La Peña 28 years ago!
We are so excited to share this special moment and historical milestone with you. We know that these last 49 years would not have been possible without your continuous support and belief in the importance of what we do. You have transformed 3105 Shattuck Ave into so much more than just a building: you’ve made it a cultural landmark and the holder of countless powerful memories and human connections! If these walls could talk, the stories (and chismes) would fill the Smithsonian. Come be part of this. Celebrate with us and share the recognition of the history the La Peña’s community has created!
About Orquesta La Moderna Tradición:
Since 1996, SF Bay Area based Orquesta la Moderna Tradición has been wowing dancers and Cuban music aficionados with their original take on the sweet but driving grooves of Cuban Charanga, featuring violins and woodwinds interlocking with driving afro-Cuban rhythms. The Orquesta is truly unique as one of the few ensembles in the world carrying on the tradition of this legendary brand of popular Cuban dance music with passionate devotion. Orq. LMT thrills audiences performing modern timba-infused arrangements guaranteed to get you on your feet, as well as traditional danzón and cha-cha-chá, transporting you back to the Havana social clubs of the 1950s. They have performed in top venues and festivals from Alaska to Spain, including The Smithsonian, Lincoln Center, The Ford Theater, Stern Grove, to name just a few. What an honor to have them back on our stage, right where they started!
