Workshop for Allies of the Mapuche People

Join us for this workshop and gathering for allies of the Mapuche people. This workshop centers native experiences, teachings and demonstrations of allyship.

AGENDA:

11am-11:30am: Landing time, Check-in and Sopaipillas by donation! All proceeds support healthcare access for Mapuche Indigenous autonomous communities

11:30am-11:45am: Introductions circle

11:45am: Welcome, Land Acknowledgement, Safe Space Commitment & Guidelines (by La Peña Cultural Center staff)

12pm: Introduction to healthcare support for Mapuche indigenous communities (by Ximena Sosa)

12:15pm: Greetings from Lonko Alberto Curamil (Mapuche leader, winner of Goldman Environmental Prize 2019)

12:25pm Treaty of Tapihue video and brief discussion

12:40pm Documentary filmmaker Majo Calderon will share on footage of her “Water for Life” documentary and current videos of her work with Mapuche communities

1pm-1:30pm Introduction to Mapundgun Workshop and closing

IMPORTANT: Do not arrive late. You cannot enter the workshop after 11:30 AM. Everyone needs to be present to consent to the Safe Space Guidelines, Meeting Agreements and Land Acknowledgement.

Expectations of Participants in this Workshop

As a participant, you consent to this workshop’s dynamic which centers Mapuche perspectives, voices and demonstrations of allyship and agree to participate with the following Community Agreements and Expectations. By registering for this workshop you commit:

  • To learn Mapuche history & current affairs from an indigenous perspective.
  • To bring an attitude of self-awareness, accountability and responsibility for our own internalized biases and attitudes toward indigenous peoples, history, culture and current affairs.
  • To acknowledge Wallmapu as Mapuche Land (Please read about the Treaty of Tapihue)
  • If there is an issue and would like La Peña staff or board intervention, please speak to a La Peña staff person at the event or you can request support at: Lapena.org/contact

Meeting Communication Agreements

1) Be present.

2) Take care of yourself and each other.

3) Bring a spirit of possibility.

4) Listen with humility to learn from our guest speakers and native voices.

5) Utilize Inquiry rather than assumption.

6) Practice respectful communication. 

7) Respect the moderator and speakers’ requests and boundaries

8) Speak from experience. When making comments, use “I” statements, such as: “I feel…” “I would like…”

9) Step up, step back. Consider your amount of air time.

10) View any missteps as learning opportunities to be a better ally and/or communicator.
