Join us for a powerful screening of Prodigal Daughter, directed and produced by Mabel Valdiviezo, as part of the Immigrant Voices Film Series at La Peña Cultural Center.

Prodigal Daughter takes a deep, personal look into the immigrant experience through the eyes of the filmmaker herself. After 16 years of silence, Valdiviezo reunites with her family in Peru, confronting haunting childhood memories and a troubled past as an undocumented immigrant in the United States. The documentary offers intimate access to Valdiviezo and her vibrant photo-paintings of her family, weaving a powerful narrative about family bonds, identity, belonging, and the transformative power of art. Through the lens of human rights, gender, and immigration, Prodigal Daughter challenges the “good immigrant” versus “bad immigrant” narrative, providing a more nuanced and complex perspective on migration and identity.

After the screening, stay for a discussion with the filmmaker and a representative from Street Level Health Project, a community organization serving immigrant youth in Oakland, CA. This event will benefit Street Level Health Project.
