Puerto Rican Rhythms and Songs

This ensemble workshop focuses on popular rhythms and song forms from Puerto Rico such as Plena, Bomba, Seis, Aguinaldo, and Guaracha Jíbara. The first half of the workshop is instructional. Participants learn to play panderos de plena (frame drums), barriles de bomba (barrel drums), gúícharo (the Puerto Rican güiro), maraca, bongó and other percussion instruments. The second half of each session is dedicated to studying and playing traditional and original pieces in a variety of genres and styles. There is a recital at the end of the semester and opportunities to perform at community events throughout the year. For more information please contact the instructor at hectorlugo65@gmail.com
