Son jarocho is a community music that reflects the cycle of life in its poetic lyrics. Classes at La Peña focus instruction on jarana jarocha, singing (including poetry), and percussion (including zapateado dance), although all son jarocho instruments are welcomed. Emphasis is placed on learning basic rhythms that are the keys to the majority of the sones jarochos and working together in music to understand “how all the parts fit together”. Join us in this community building experience to build our resilience against the ever increasing stresses of our urban lifestyle.
Please bring your own instruments, hard-soled shoes (for zapateado), skirt. A few instruments are available for in class use. Contact instructor María de la Rosa for more information at mariadlr4@gmail.com.
*PLEASE NOTE: This class follows current City of Berkeley and CDC guidelines regarding Covid-19 safety measures.
