THE ORIGINS OF CUMBIA CONCERT
Colombian musicians, Kiko Villamizar y su grupo out of Austin Texas, are touring California to share their ancestral knowledge of Colombian cumbia, and also fusing Afro-Colombian, Reggae, and other Latin world beats.
Kiko Villamizar’s group, which recently put out an album called “Aguas Frias”, features some of the BEST traditional cumbia players from Colombia including: Shango Dely on tambor alegre (has toured with Carlos Vives & Santana) , Fabian Rincon on drum set, Cesar Valencia on bass, and Cesar Osorio on guitar.
For this VERY SPECIAL West Coast Tour, they will be traveling with two elders directly from Sahagún, Colombia who are Master Gaita players: Elber Alvarez and Jose Paternina of the group “Trapiche de Colomboy”. Gaitas are the traditional pre-Colombian instruments that were the foundation for original cumbias.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE: Opening for this amazing group is Discos Resaca Collective, a long time Bay Area Cumbia/Salsa/Tropical group who just released their first vinyl 45 and is known for getting the dance party started!
DJ Lautaro, a long time collector of Colombian & tropical music will be playing all vinyl Cumbia Folklórica between sets.
ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF CUMBIA:
Cumbia is a traditional music form that dates back to the 17th century in Colombia. Since then, Cumbia has traveled the Americas and found a home everywhere, morphing into the sound that describes each culture it finds.
Cumbia was born of a cultural mix of African and indigenous backgrounds and is a musical tradition that symbolizes survival and resistance to colonization. This tradition is a symbol of black and brown unitiy that is a story of the past, present, and future!
