“Punto de Encuentro” (“Meeting Point”) is a film directed by Roberto Baeza (2022) that reveals the intimate process between filmmakers Alfredo and Paulina, as they attempt to recreate what their fathers experienced in Villa Grimaldi.
We are going to be screening the film (for the first time ever on the West Coast) and after that Paulina Costa (director/producer) will be joining us virtually for a moderated community discussion!
This event is part of our month-long commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the U.S.-backed coup that overthrew the government of Salvador Allende in Chile in 1973. This painful historical event marks the origin of La Peña as a community center and, to this day, it is the backbone of our mission to promote social justice and intercultural understanding through the arts. Please get your ticket and support our 50th Commemoration. Your ticket includes popcorn!
Event coordinated in collaboration with María José Calderon and Kathleen Vickery.
MORE ABOUT THE FILM:
– Country: Chile
– Release: 2022
– Director: Roberto Baeza
– Cast: Cecilia Muñoz, Félix Villar, Vicente Baeza, Cloe Baeza, Claudia Navarrete, Pablo Medina
– Language: Spanish with English subtitles
– Duration: 90 minutes
– Synopsis: Filmmakers Alfredo García and Paulina Costa were babies when both of their fathers were taken by the forces of Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile. Together their fathers were held in a small cell within Villa Grimaldi, one of the most notorious torture centres of that era. During their imprisonment, their fathers forged an unbreakable friendship, but only one of them, Paulina’s father, survived to return to his family. Now, 45 years later, the filmmakers and their families reconstruct the last days before their fathers were detained and what lay in store for them in captivity. With actors recreating those experiences on set, this film within a film unfolds as three generations of the two families witness the past play out before their eyes. Filmed as Chile rises once more with a strong social movement against a repressive state, Meeting Point reveals the power of memory in the ongoing struggle for truth, justice and understanding the long-term effects of state terrorism.”

*ENGLISH BELOW*
- Invitados espaciales: Lydia Mills y Daniel Oñate.
ENGLISH:
The tragic case of the singer, composer, theater director and poet Victor Jara is the epitome of the hatred of the Chilean upper class and their fear of the founding process of a more just Chilean society. The cruelty of the minions against the physical and visceral humanity of a poet who only sang to the love he had for his people, cannot be more exemplary. Why so sinister hatred against a poet? Why did they have to destroy his body with brutal blows and 44 bullets? Because the Chilean bourgeoisie and its armed wing, supported by treasonous politicians and financed by the United States, could not bear the idea of a popular government dedicated to bringing its people out of misery. It’s no wonder that Victor’s voice and work became a worldwide symbol almost instantly. His work is so perennial that it has been interpreted and adopted by most Latin American countries and the entire world. For this concert, the Dúo Made y Feña, in the company of numerous local and foreign artists, will highlight the moral victory of our Victor by playing his best songs. We will also have the presence of Carlos Baron as the MC, playwright and one of the founders of La Peña.
This concert will be the closing event of a month-long commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the U.S.-backed coup in Chile that overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende in 1973. You can see the full program at bit.ly/chile50aniversario
