La Peña is celebrating its 45th year anniversary! With your support, La Peña can continue to operate online while our building has to be closed due to shelter in place.
We commissioned this illustration by Chilean artist Freddy Agurto Parra to represent a future we envision, where La Peña’s rich cultures and unique programs are accessible worldwide digitally! This image honors some of the exceptional cultural bearers and community organizers that are the heartbeat of our center, while demonstrating the potential of a digital future for La Peña.
Join us in celebrating from Top Left to Right: Shefali Shah (🇵🇷 Bomba Aguacero, Bay Area Bomba y Plena Workshop Teaching Artist); Maria de la Rosa (🇲🇽 DíaPaSón & Son Jarocho Teaching Artist), Bruce Williams (🇨🇺 🇺🇸 Community Organizer for Cuban Rumba Jam); Bottom Left to Right: Sergio Bitencourt (🇧🇷 No Balanço D’Angola Capoeira Teacher and Community Organizer), Victor Jara (🇨🇱 Nueva Canción artist & activist killed during the Pinochet coup d’etat) and Peta Robles (🇵🇪 Master Cajón Artist, Teaching Artist for Youth and Adults, De Rompe y Raja Cultural Association). We felt it was critical to include Victor Jara in this illustration because his legacy of uplifting our community through art and social justice lives on with our long-time supporters, partners, community organizers, artivists, staff, volunteers and board members.

HOW TO START A FACEBOOK FUNDRAISER FOR LA PEÑA:
2) Please make the title of your campaign “100 Compañerxs for La Peña’s 45th Anniversary!” (or “Compañeras” / “Compañeros” / “Compañeres” – whatever you prefer! )
3) The campaign’s end date should be no later than mid August.
4) Please write what we are fundraising for. The fundraiser will automatically generate standard language that is not related to this campaign. Here is some example language:
Please join me in fundraising for La Peña Cultural Center! Your contribution allows La Peña’s mission to continue while their doors have to be closed during this pandemic and will allow them to invest in online strategies to support artists and social justice movements!
La Peña is celebrating its 45th year in the midst of nationwide mobilizations against oppression and a worldwide pandemic, which have magnified existing inequities in our society.
We believe that this historic moment can serve as a catalyst for creating a more just and equitable world and La Peña is in a strong position to play a key role in movement-building today.
La Peña is taking its mission further by launching new online programs, resource pages and more this year!
Your support will allow La Peña to double down on its mission through:
ONLINE CLASSES – Starting this summer, we will offer FREE introductory online classes to some of La Peña’s long-standing cultural art forms in English and Spanish. This program will also support our teaching artists and cultural bearers financially and with exposure.
SOCIAL JUSTICE DIALOGUES – These conversations will help educate and bring together our communities in solidarity with grassroots and national networks for social change. These dialogues will range in topics from civic engagement to artist talks.
ARTISTS SPONSORSHIPS – La Peña will sponsor artists from our networks to livestream content to compensate for lost work. We’ve compiled a list of resources for artists and a landing page that highlights the work of artists, musicians and other creatives impacted by the ripple effects of COVID-19. We are expanding on that platform with this continued work.
To enter this new digital frontier, we need 100 compañerxs (partners) to commit to raising $450 each to reach our goal of $45,000 by August 31, 2020 so that we can fund these new digital programs and broaden our impact more than ever before.
