Art Exhibition: Reclaimation

January 24, 2016 @ 5:00 pm

RECLAMATIONPOSTERJoin us at La Peña Cultural Center for the Reclaimation Exhibition, where time is seen as another border. This show looks at the meaning of ownership and appropriation, as it applys to culture, in a world where the physical landscapeis in constant flux. When an island is destroyed and a river divides a forest, what culture inherits the narrative?

About the artists:

SOFÍA CÓRDOVA

Sofia Cordova incorporates a variety of digital mediums into her work, such as audio and video installations, which are full of bright colors. Her pieces center on motion, color while incorporating a conscious culture clash or juxtaposition that points to our consumer culture.

Dave Yoas

Dave Yoas creates collaged sculptures with tin pieces from vintage toys and tools. He reimagines the pop culture from of his childhood as antisocial nicho inspired works. The nicho, like much of Mexican culture, bleeds into the American pop aesthetic. Yoas notes the bridge in Mexican and American culture that seems to transcend the southwest border.

Joshua Solis

Joshua Solis created a shifting floor, composed of materials he identifies as “memory triggering.” Solis experienced a constant cultural shift, as he traveled back and forth between the U.S. and Mexico throughout his life. His work represents the desire to heal, while at the same time it captures a lack of stability.
