This special evening of flamenco music and dance culminates Juan del Gastor’s 2-week residency in the Bay Area after a 4-year absence and serves as a farewell performance before he heads back to Spain. He will be joined on stage by artists such as Lakshmi “La Chimi” (dancer), Clara Rodríguez (dancer/singer), Roberto Zamora (dancer/singer) and Luis de la Tota (percussionist).

JUAN DEL GASTOR was born in Moron de la Frontera and is a nephew of the legendary guitarist Diego del Gastor. He has toured with Farruquito and Torombo and has accompanied such revered singers as Camarón de la Isla, Miguel Funi and Fernanda de Utrera. A natural entertainer and festero, Juan loves to sing and dance in the Gypsy style of his home town. His contagious good humor and spontaneity have sparked many an impromptu flamenco fiesta, which have drawn to a close in the early hours of the morning with the sound of his guitar playing a soulful soleá.

LUIS DE LA TOTA was born in one of the oldest Gypsy neighborhoods of Jerez de La Frontera, El Barrio de Santiago. He began his career as a percussionist at the age of 8, taking his artistic name from his grandmother ‘La Tota’ who has been an inspiration to him since his infancy. As a percussionist and palmero, Luis tours with flamenco’s top artists such as Antonio Del Pipa, Fernando de La Morena, El Capullo, Moraito, Diego Carrasco and Angelita Vargas and has performed as part of the Bay Area Flamenco Festival several times. As a Flamenco lyricist, his verses (letras) have been recorded widely and his work as a percussionist can be heard on many CDs.

LAKSHMI “LA CHIMI” has lived in Spain since 2002 and has solidly established her career in Sevilla, an essential cradle place of flamenco. In 2011 Lakshmi made history, being the first non-Spanish artist to win an award for flamenco dance at the prestigious Concurso de las Minas de La Unión. She was later granted another important award at the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba.

CLARA RODRIGUEZ has been working professionally in the flamenco world for 25 years. She studied extensively in Sevilla, Granada and Madrid with master teachers Juana Amaya, Concha Vargas, Andrés Marín, Isabel Bayón, Andres Peña, Úrsula Lopez, Ana Calí, Patricia Guerrero and a host of others. During this time she also studied flamenco singing with the legendary Inés Bacán of Lebrija. A Bay Area resident since 2010, she directs AguaClara Flamenco and performs regularly on the local flamenco circuit as both singer and dancer.

ROBERTO ZAMORA Roberto Zamora has been a performer of flamenco song and dance for well over 45 years. Roberto’s style and knowledge has been inspired through close association with flamenco legends “La Fernanda” and “La Bernarda,” Pepe Rios, “Anzonini del Puerto,” “el Funi,” Agustín Rios, and of course, Juan del Gastor.
