Bomba Percussion 101 with Maestro Roman “Ito” Carrillo

Bay Area Bomba y Plena Workshop is bringing in the New Year with a much awaited Bomba percussion workshop by el Maestro Roman “Ito” Carrillo.

This 4 week series is open to ALL levels and will cover fundamental aspects and techniques for 4 basic Bomba rhythms: Sicá, Yubá, Cuembé and Holandés. Students will learn fundamental techniques and skills for playing the barril drum, cuas, and maraca. This is an amazing opportunity to learn from a Bay Area Master and gem who brings years of experience, skill and knowledge to our workshop.

With 40 years of experience, Román “Ito” Carrillo has worked with some of the world’s most renowned percussionists. Ito, as he is known in the music industry, recorded his first album at the age of 9 with his father Roman Carrillo Sr. in New York. He toured with the National Folkloric Ballet of Puerto Rico Areyto as a percussionist performing in places like Israel, Spain, France, Turkey, the United States, Martinique, St. Croix, and St. Thomas. In 1979 Román joined the renowned Familia Cepeda who for decades have symbolized Bomba and Plena, two musical genres of the Puerto Rican folklore, and where he got his formal education in both genres. Román also has experience with the folkloric group Paseo Taíno whose specialty is Música Jíbara, music from the mountain regions of Puerto Rico.
