Donation-based entry: $5-$10 Sliding Scale
This is an all ages jam, held by the Bay Area Bomba y Plena Workshop! This event is family friendly and encourages your participation. We will dance, sing, play drums and enjoy delicious food by Los Cilantros. Bring your voice, barriles, faldas and maracas as we sing, play and dance in community!
Bomba is a traditional form of Puerto Rican music and dance. The central feature of all bomba dancing is its improvisational character. The dancer calls, with her or his moves, for specific accents and figures, piquetes, that the drummer has to execute on the drum. This occurs in the form of a friendly yet fiery competition where each dancer and drummer showcases their skills.
Musically, bomba features the use of the drum and other percussion instruments in combination with an African derived call and response vocal style.
The Batey Boricua community jam is brought to you by The Bomba y Plena Workshop at La Peña. Classes for children are available on Thursdays at 4pm, and for adults Sundays 1pm-3pm. Check out La Peña’s Classes Calendar here for more information.
