Housing is a human right! Join members of the Housing Now coalition and documentary filmmaker Pam Uzzell at La Peña Cultural Center to discuss rising rents, displacement, and what we can do to stop it.
The event features a screening of the short documentary film Welcome to the Neighborhood by Pam Uzzell. The film traces the historical fight against BART in 1968, led by Berkeley resident Mabel Howard, which forced BART to construct Ashby BART line underground and prevent the racial segregation of South Berkeley residents. When Mabel daughter Mildred, an internationally renown artist, receives a 50% rent increase, Howard comes to terms with leaving the city that has always been her home. This narrative will open up a community discussion connecting historical and current issues of gentrification and displacement in the Bay.
Following the film will be a presentation by members of the Housing Now coalition on Proposition 10 – a statewide ballot initiative that would restore the right of local communities to protect families from skyrocketing rents. Learn how we can give power back to local communities to limit rent increases and implement thoughtful laws that address their unique housing situations.
