The 7th Annual Cross Cultural Concert showcases the Balinese traditional music and dance of Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s Angklung and Dance ensembles, and the dynamic fusion of gamelan and guitars by the group Purnamasari.
Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s Angklung ensemble presents the fluid grace of traditional repertoire in a bright and rhythmically intricate musical landscape of gongs, drums, metallophones and flutes. Tuned to a four-tone scale in slendro tuning, the music is complemented by the elaborate costumes and dramatic movements of Sekar Jaya’s dance ensemble. Details of music and dance are tightly coordinated, expressing an ideal of unity that is sought in every gesture, nuance, expression, phrase, and rhythmic change. (www.gsj.org)
Purnamasari performs cross-cultural music featuring Indonesian gamelan instruments and musical techniques fused with guitar based songs, with choreographed movements drawn from Balinese dance vocabulary. This concert premieres songs from The Weaver, a new work telling a story of 3 generations of an Indonesian family in song, dance and spoken word. (www.lisagraciano.com/purnamasari)
