For 43 years La Peña Cultural Center has supported artists and genres before they gained wide popularity. Following this tradition, we are celebrating La Peña’s 43rd birthday party with a concert by La Chamba, a Los Angeles-based group that is blowing up and resurfacing a musical genre called “Chicha”.

La Chamba fuses psychedelic electric guitar & organs with Afro-Latin rhythms, such as cumbia, salsa, timba, rumba and other global rhythms. The group is inspired by 60’s & 70’s psychedelic Peruvian surf-cumbia genre known as “Chicha” music, popular among the working classes of Lima and the Amazon. Their sound pays homage to the vintage melodies of Peruvian Chicha music while creating a unique sound born in Los Angeles known as “Chicha Angelina.”

La Chamba has collaborated with Chicha legend, Jose Luis Carballo, who plays on La Chamba’s cover version of “Cariñito,” which was recently released on the band’s debut album, Ecos de la Selva. The album also includes tunes by Los Diablos Rojos, Los Destellos and Juaneco y Su Combo.

The showcase will be followed by a community bombazo jam! So bring your dancing shoes, skirts, y todo eso!

ABOUT BAY AREA BOMBA Y PLENA WORKSHOP: 

At the Bay Area Bomba y Plena Workshop at La Peña, youth and adults study and perform traditional forms of Puerto Rican music and dance. Bringing together folks from diverse cultural backgrounds united by their common love and passion for Puerto Rican music, in particular the traditions of Plena and Bomba. 

Under the direction of Shefali Shah and Héctor Lugo, with the generous support of el maestro Román “Ito” Carrillo as well as numerous masters and practitioners from the Island, The Workshop has been in existence for 17 years promoting the study and appreciation of traditional Puerto Rican music, its history and evolution, and its place in the broader Afro-Caribbean musical culture. The group performs Bombas, Plenas, as well as pieces from the Jíbaro music tradition using a variety of typical instruments such as the barriles, the cuás, panderos, güícharo, maracas, cuatro and guitar.

ABOUT PLENEROS DE LA BAHIA:
The “Plena” is Puerto Rico’s most popular form of music with a rich history of political activism and documentation of the everyday lives, concerns and humor of working class Puerto Ricans and of every Puerto Rican. Its main instruments are the “pandereta”, an Islamic-derived frame drum held in one hand and played with the other, and the “güícharo”, a gourd scraper of indigenous Taino origin.

La Mixta’s repertoire of originals and funky renditions of traditional tunes, features a variety of swinging Caribbean grooves, from plena, bomba, guaracha jíbara, aguinaldo, to merengue, son, rumba, seis, cumbia and salsa. We would like our music and lyrics to inspire you to dance, to sing, and also to think about where we have come from and where we are moving towards as individuals, as a people, as a society, as humans in a shared world.

ABOUT DJ JOSE RUIZ:
DJ José Ruíz (aka MundoMuzik) is a DJ, radio host, promoter, and collector of world music, vinyl, art and all cultural and music ephemera. Jose’s taste in music is very eclectic, unafraid to mix traditional, experimental or folkloric elements in his sets. His confidence and impeccable taste in music is deeply rooted in the time and research he dedicates to learn about the genres he plays. His respect for the origin and tradition of music he loves can be heard in depth as a radio host and felt when he fills the dance floor.

The Berkeley World Music Festival promotes musical traditions as diverse as the people of the Bay, while cultivating the social value of the world’s music and cementing the Bay Area as a center for world music and artistic expression.
