Flamencos por La Peña!
Flamenco dancing and music was not popularized until the late 18th and 19th century because of its association with Gypsy culture which was widely disliked by Spanish society. Flamenco did not achieve popularity until non-Gypsies began performing it, therefore giving it legitimacy as an art form. Non-gypsies began performing Flamenco in cafes and theaters and its popularity quickly integrated it into a long lasting and important part of Spanish culture.
Yaelisa is known as one the most talented Flamenco artists of her generation. She has presented her choreography in Spain and lived and performed there extensively throughout her career. She has been hailed by critics around the world for her passion, rhythmic ability and emotional dance. She has received an Emmy Award for Choreography and a Choreography Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts.
We are very excited to bring Yaelisa to La Peña along with Roberto Zamora, Keni “El Lebrijano”, Jason McGuire “El Rubio”, El Grillo, David McLean, Clara Rodriguez, Nina Menendez, Patricia Ines “La Rubia”, Cynthia Sanchez, Caminos II, & many more!

Holiday Parranda!
The Venezuelan Music Project, one of the only groups performing Venezuelan music in the Bay Area is coming to La Peña for a special Holiday Parranda! The project was founded in 1997 by Jackeline Rago to perform a wide range of Venezuelan music from traditional folk songs to contemporary dance songs. The project fuses indigenous Venezuelan, Arab-Andalusian, West Africa and Spanish-European genres to bring the sounds of Venezuela to the Bay Area. The Venezuelan Music Project plays a collection of authentic instruments from Venezuelan to give the audience an experience of real traditional sounds of Venezuelan music. Especially notable in the unique sound of the VMP is the Cuatro, a small guitar that is heard in almost all styles of Venezuelan music and beautifully complements the percussions and wind instruments of the band. The band has an incredible energy and is sure to get your feet tapping! Eat, drink and be merry with us this holiday season at this special Venezuelan Parranda!
