Call for Vendors for La Peña’s Holiday Gift Guide

DEADLINE TO APPLY: Sunday, November 15, 2020

Since we cannot hold our annual Holiday Mercado this year due to the pandemic, La Peña is supporting our vendor community with an online Holiday Gift Guide. The Holiday Gift Guide will be a curated listing of vendors on La Peña’s website and newsletter. Selected vendors will also be featured in our social media.

This is a free vendor listing. However, by applying to be a vendor, you consent to receiving emails from La Peña.

PLEASE NOTE: This will be a curated holiday guide and there is no guarantee that everyone who applies will be listed or featured. While every vendor is welcome to sign up, we are prioritizing featuring local (within the greater Bay Area) artisans and artists who identify as BIPOC/LGBTQIA+/multiracial/immigrants/migrants.

Aida Salazar

Books

Aida Salazar is an arts activist and an award-winning author whose work focuses on issues of identity and social justice. She is the author of the novels, The Moon Within (International Latino Book Award, Américas Award Honor, Golden Poppy Award), the critically-acclaimed Land of the Cranes and the forthcoming, A Seed in the Sun. She’s also author of the forthcoming picture books Jovita Wore Pants: The Story of a Revolutionary Fighter, and In the Spirit of a Dream: 13 Stories of Immigrants of Color and co-editor of Calling the Moon: Writings on Menstruation by Middle Grade Authors of Color. She is a founding member of Las Musas, a Latinx kid lit author collective. Her story, By the Light of the Moon was adapted into a ballet by the Sonoma Conservatory of Dance and is the first Xicana-themed ballet in history.

Jose Flores Chamale

Jose Flores is a self-taught artist based out of New York whose heart and spirit remain rooted in his place of birth, Guatemala, the heartland of the Maya. His homeland’s long and ancient traditions of the Maya is where he draws his inspiration for his work.

He pays homage to his people and ancestors by capturing their sacredness with powerful, dream-like portraits. Rich and lively earth tone colors of blue and green splash behind colors of brown skin to capture the special relationship between indigenous peoples and Mother Earth.

Through his art, Jose revives his indigenous heritage and identity that has long been in a 500-year battle for survival.

Oree Originol’s “Justice for our Lives” portrait series – Bay Area

Oree Originol is a Bay Area-based artist who created Justice For Our Lives – an open source digital portrait series of 100 people killed by US law enforcement (this is a work in progress, and as of now there are 97 portraits). Oree Originol makes these designs available for free download on his website to support impacted families of state sponsored terror and to serve as a tool that amplifies these stories in our activism. In this altar, you will see that 29 portraits of the series were selected to honor those killed in the Bay Area alone. These portraits do not represent all police killings in the Bay Area – in fact, since 2015 law enforcement have killed 110 people in the Bay Area. We are grateful to Oree that through his work, we are able to bring more awareness to these souls so that they may rest in justice.

La Peña Cultural Center and Los Cilantros Restaurant welcome you to our humble Día de Muertos event! Let’s keep each other safe so that we can continue to find creative ways to build community during these unprecedented times.

Here is some helpful information to help you navigate this event:

 

  • Follow the BLUE X’s on the floor for the Art Sale & Community Altar
  • Follow the GREEN X’s on the floor for the Restaurant section
  • Masks are mandatory.
  • There is no dining on-site- click here for nearby parks to picnic.
  • Please keep at least a 6-ft distance from folks that are not in your bubble.
  • Portions of this event will be Livestreamed to La Peña’s Facebook page here.
  • Please be mindful that there are people waiting in line behind you – so we ask that you not take more than 5 minutes at each station.

Event flow: With our community’s healing and safety in mind, this event is intended to be a social distance walk-through and pick-up of food & art.

  1. Art prints by Ernesto Hernandez-Olmos ($25) La Peña Facemasks for sale ($10). Artesania by In Lak’ech Danza Azteca for sale.
  2. Outdoor community altar by Manuel Garcia & La Peña Community,  featuring selected artwork by Oree Originol’s “Justice for our Lives” portrait series.
  3. Walk through Los Cilantros restaurant for Dia de Muertos Art Series by Ernesto Hernandez-Olmos & ofrenda by Los Cilantros staff
  4. Food pick-up at Los Cilantros: special menu for Dia de Muertos! Please note, some items may be sold out if you have not pre-ordered by October 30th.
