The Moores’ introduction to Latin American art began with visiting South America while their son David was studying in Santiago, Chile. They maintained relationships with some artists for several decades, and many of the artists are known and collected worldwide. Jean and Norman were so enthusiastic that they found themselves with what Norm would call a “first class problem” – more art than they could display. In 1966 they took their passion to the gallery level, opening Moore Galleries on Sutter Street in San Francisco.
In one wildly popular reception, Moore Galleries made history in July 1967, showing posters designed for the show by the “Big Five” psychedelic poster artists – Rick Griffin, Wes Wilson, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelly and Victor Moscoso. Herb Caen wrote a column dedicated to the event, saying “some 3,500 people, largely wild, jammed into the place, dressed in fantastic costumes – old uniforms covered with medals, American Flags worn as headdresses, pirate outfits, cavaliers and miniskirts so short that Carl Larson described them as ‘A pride of loins.’”
