People’s Movement Assembly Launches World Courts of Women on Poverty in the U.S.

Read this article to learn more about an approach that “brings to life the world that we know is possible. ”

“Most World Courts of Women have focused on specific clusters of issues that are especially relevant to their region, but they have shared the common aims of destabilizing dominant narratives and bringing the realities of the everyday violence in people’s lives to the forefront. Speakers bear witness to many injustices, but the Courts are also about empowerment and the validation of women’s diverse experiences and subject positions.”

The Women’s Economic Agenda Project will Coordinate The Western Court (held in Oakland, CA, May 10-13). Check out their website for more information.

In honor of Womyn’s Herstory Month, La Pena’s 2nd Gen presents: Where Water is Born  /El Ojo del Agua, a night of ceremony, poetry and song. Featuring: Luisa Leija, Claudia Cuentas, Celena Delphi, Lisa Evans, Mariposa, Laura Victoria Salazar and Antique.

Followed by an After Party in the Lounge.

Los Rakas represent pan-American flows. Two cousins who grew up in Panama before spending their teens in Oakland, California, Raka Dun and Raka Rich put a distinctive “Panabay” twist on hip-hop and reggae, bridging the streetwise sounds of the places they’ve called home. Drawing on Panamanian plena’s faithful approach to reggae classics and the Bay Area’s independent and idiosyncratic hip-hop scene, Los Rakas merge familiar dancehall melodies with a lyricism all their own.

Bocas Radioactivas is a special benefit event celebrating Afro-Latino culture, immigrant rights and Spanglish spoken word and hip-hop. Featuring: Los Rakas with HBO Def Poets: Paul S. Flores, Mark Gonzales, Emanuel Xavier and special guests Sandra Garcia-Rivera, Adrian Arancibia and DJ Leydis. A benefit for U.S. based Latino spoken word poets seeking support to travel to Cuba to participate in the Havana International Poetry Festival.
