On November 19th, La Peña is bringing back Thangs Taken: Rethinking Thanksgiving, an annual event that challenges the colonial narrative of “Thanksgiving” by celebrating native arts, organizing, and cultural work. If you are a native artist, cultural worker, activist, or organizer, or if the work you do resources native folks in your community, we are inviting YOU to table at Thangs Taken in our community room. Esta muestra de 40 fotografías en blanco y negro exhibe el trabajo del Centro Cultural Roberto Matta para las Artes y la Educación (Quilpué, Chile), un proyecto artístico liderado por jóvenes que se centra en la realización de murales que involucran a las comunidades locales en la creación de espacios de convergencia ciudadana a través del arte y la creatividad. Desde escuelas públicas y juntas de vecinos hasta espacios culturales en Bolivia y Cuba, el Centro Cultural Roberto Matta interviene con sus pinceles y facilita espacios de reflexión, alfabetismo cultural, justicia social, y solidaridad.
Sobre el Centro Cultural Roberto Matta (Chile)
El Centro Cultural Roberto Matta para las Artes y la Educación nace en la toma del año 2011 en el Liceo Artístico Guillermo Gronemeyer. Los estudiantes que participaron de ese proceso histórico en la movilización estudiantil de ese año, junto con el académico (y ex-artista en residencia de la Peña) Carlos Villamar Tulcanaza, vieron la necesidad de recuperar los espacios artísticos en la ciudad de Quilpué (Chile) y generar un ente vinculador con la ciudadanía, teniendo al arte como estandarte.
El trabajo principal que tiene el Centro Cultural son los murales, utilizando el estilo de trabajo precolombino con bordeados negros, y que facilita la relación con la comunidad, integrando a todas las personas a pintar.
